Gone Fishing

Too much time spent on this project lately has caused me to become tired and cranky and I think I should probably take some time off for awhile.

But before I go, I'd like to pose these questions. Where are all of these people that wish for a Blood 3, or that post in forums demanding for the release of the source code for Blood 1? It's almost comical listening to people repeat the slogan "release the source code" like some mindless zombies. If it ever were released would any of these people actually do anything with it?

There's been an opportunity here for over a year for people to help in improving an official Blood game and in also creating a brand new Blood game. But people haven't exactly been banging down my door with offers of assistance. Even after being continuously shown the potential of this project, it seems that it's too much effort for most people to even offer a supportive comment. Yet there's always time for people to write another post in another forum to "release the source code".

I do greatly appreciate all of the comments and support that this project has received though. It's the reason I post and continue this madness. Even the negative comments that I receive are appreciated because at least it lets me know that people care.

But where is the Blood community, and why are most of them unwilling to help or even offer a supportive comment on all of the work being done? Perhaps they're all too busy writing about how much they wish there was a Blood 3 and that Monolith should "release the source code".

Forgive my crankiness but I need a break. I'm sure that I'll eventually return to work on all of this, because I've never been one to quit anything I started. But all of these updates, screenshots and videos do seem rather pointless based on the limited responses that they usually receive.

If anyone ever wants to take time away from posting about how Monolith should "release the source code" then they'll know where to find me...

Kurt, I like your work so much! I normally stay out of commenting because my english is bad but I visit your page nearly every day. I love Blood and I will be totally happy if you finish this project. I wish I could help you somehow, but I don't know how :-(

Hi. In my opinion your add-on has very very good! And don't make 50 levels! We will be happy if you build only 7-10! I know what is this dedit 1.0 shit! Don't be sad. Someday...

Blood will live again!

Ahhh, my friend Kurt,

We have talked about this before. You have to keep in perspective that this community is well over 10+years old now, many people abandoned Blood 2 shortly after Monolith abandoned supporting it which was close to 10 years ago. Now only the few true die-hards remain which isn't many. I, having a bit of experience with 1.0 have truely been amazed at the progress you have made with this game. You are an extremely talented person and pay very close attention to detail which is hard to find these days. I have no doubt that if you could ever finish this huge task it will be great and people will flock to it. The people around have seen many many mods come and go unfinished so I expect there to not be much support, but as you see, there are many "casual observances" of your work by people who would love to see it for themselves. I understand how hard you work and you insist of seeing thing till the end, but what I suggest is some type of demo. Not anything earth shattering but maybe 4 or 5 very strong levels that show off your work. Something that will get noticed by the bigger sites like fileplanet...etc that maybe could get you some advertisement. When people can actually get their hands on what you can do with this old game and see the potential for themselves, it will surely generate bigger interest and people will want more..... and maybe more will come forward to help. This is how the it worked for the zombie mod for Half-Life (I cant remember the guys name who made it) He created the mod mostly on his own, released a small 3 or 4 level demo and people were blown away. Eventually it became soo popular that it became a game all in itself. If I remember right it was called "They Hunger" look it up. I feel that Resurrection has all the potential that mod had and more. I dont know what else to say, I understand you have your own life, for my own selfish reasons I wouldn't mind if you locked yourself away in a room until your project is done but I understand your frustration. You know you have my support and with my limited free time nowadays, I will help you as much as I can.

Kurt!

"I live..." is definitly right. You should publish some sort of demo - 3, 4 levels which will include all the improvements you've done so far. Nothing works better for a promotional purposes than personal in-game experience!

Remember I am gonna keep doing my work for a project. I know it's not much, but at least something.

Don't give up! You're doing a great job, and I'm sure that one day you will benefit much from it.

Cheers from Poland!

Thanks for the comments, and for that lengthy post ILA. Let me now add my own.

It means a lot to me to know that at least a few people care about any of this. I know you've mentioned before that people will react differently once there's a demo, but how did things change when I released an early alpha demo back in 2007? Or how about your own SP level that was released, and which used parts of Resurrection? Most people simply continued to remain silent and no one offered to help.

I've released hundreds of screenshots and over a dozen videos that demonstrate the potential of this project. The sewer video actually generated insults, and though the trailer video received fewer comments then the sewer video, at least no one has insulted it yet.

I am aware of "They Hunger" and the reality is slightly different from what you suggested. Neil Manke created dozens of amateur Quake and Quake 2 maps before being approached by PC Gamer magazine to create a zombie mod for Half Life. It was heavily promoted by PC Gamer so that it eventually became as popular as it did.

I've been working alone on all of this for awhile now and PC Gamer isn't going to help me. But I do think it's sad that there haven't been more offers to help. The lack of feedback is also discouraging, and the insults that I still receive are even worse. Even Monolith and Atari have refused to respond to any of my emails. Yet there's always time for people to post about how much they wish there was a Blood 3 and that Monolith should release the source code.

I actually became excited about this project recently while experimenting with the Jupiter engine. It was a joy to work with and some really amazing things could be done with this editor and this engine. I also realized that any Blood map ever created could be made to run in this engine! It was so easy to work with this editor that I felt I could probably build dozens of levels in a matter of weeks.

But then reality sank in. Few people even care, based on the response of the idea, and no one would probably ever offer to help in recoding the game. The thought of returning to DEDit 1.0 was depressing to me and I began to wonder why the hell I was even doing any of this when so few people even care.

I'm sure that I'll eventually return to work on all of this. But I've been working alone for far too long and right now I'm extremely tired, burnt out, and unhappy.

But I do appreciate the comments :)

Coders are hard to find Kurt, you know that.
Transfusion came to a screeching halt when the main coders left for real life matters. Thankfully Willis and others have picked it back up but it has never been the same.
Also please remember, the internet is a breeding ground for trolls. And with the failure of Blood 2 I'm sure you will receive alot of flack for trying to do something good with it (I experienced alot of that first hand)
I understand your frustration my friend, I have been there myself.
Your right, there is no PCgamer around to help anymore, but you see how obscure things catch on like wildfire around the internet if it's done well.
I have to disagree with you about your alpha demo. I was lucky enough to snatch it up right when you posted it but if I remember right, you didnt make it available for download for very long and people were asking for it later after you had taken it down. I never passed it around because I didnt know your feelings at the time aboout distributing it. If you like I can make a clean rez with your alpha and post it somewhere and see what happens?

That demo was HUGE, at hundreds of MB's, ILA. It's also old and buggy, and I'm not sure whether it would even be worth anyone's trouble. But if it were available anywhere it would need to be identified as some kind of experimental alpha.

I don't plan on releasing any playable demos until I get all of these bugs worked out eventually. But maybe someone out there might be interested in that huge old alpha demo. I don't recommend or support it, so its your decison on whether it should be available.

Kurt, why not forgo 90% of the coding and call it something else, say: "The Chosen: Resurrection". You could then make a mod for NOLF 2 or Contract Jack, reworking the code where it was needed and concentrating on levels and models.

"Release the demo" LOL

Blogger kurt said...

Very funny Anonymous. But I no longer have that old alpha demo available and there's nothing else prepared. The game code still needs a lot of work and so do the levels and models, which is why I feel so frustrated with the community. But if someone else were to upload that old alpha I'd have no objection, although I offer no support on it and can't recommend it for its playability.

Thanks for the suggestion zZardoZz and for your efforts. Although a Blood game on the Jupiter engine could be a great thing, its unlikely that it'll ever become a reality due to lack of community support and assistance. But I'm sure that I'll eventually feel like returning to work on all of this, because I've never been one to give up on anything. I just really need a break...

I also was one that grab the demo when it was posted, and I enjoyed it until it eventually crashed (very often indeed, but that was a Blood 2 constant). However I think that you are right to not release other alpha demos since people would get annoyed with bugs and glitches.
Unfortunately the biggest part of the project is on code, where few have competences and results are difficult to see from the average user. Even thinking to recode from scratch (or nearly) an entire game is a very unappealing perspective for any coder out there since it means months of hard work.
In my opinion, the demo should eventually be released only when the core part of coding (read AI, weapons, and whatever is needed in all the game) is nearly complete. This demo could be made of a single, well finished map with some challenging gameplay and eventually an original reworked map. That would show the improvements you are bringing to the original game and your ability as level/model designer.
This may take long time, but would catch for sure some attention, as good and well implemented projects usually do when they actually reach the pcs.
I hope that you will proceed with the project, it would be a pity if all you did were lost.

Hi,i'm snake plissken on the postmortem board.
Every day i check the forum for news about the projects, and seeing that were none in a week i decided to check the site.
I understand how you feel about the lack of help from the community. You are not alone.Think about Clari87 and his awesome work in progress mod or the poor wango and it's Blood Pulp Fiction...it seems that silence is a pretty common thing in blood universe. :(
I am trying to find some people to help, but as you foresaw,it's pretty an hard task.
Don't be discouraged, though: many people waits in silence and trusts in your work.Take a break,if you need it but please don't leave the project dead.It would be the final blow to the community.
Best wishes and sorry for the bad english. :)
Bye!

Thanks, JenaPlissken. It's always difficult to find more brains especially when the project feels as dead as a zombie. But hopefully it'll all be resurrected again, after a bit of a rest in the crypt.

I agree with your comments and suggestions, buti. I'd like to eventually release a demo when the bugs are finally exterminated, and hopefully that might wake a few people up. But in the meantime, Ishmael is drowning while I hunt for Gill Beasts, and the Blood community posts more requests for the B1 source code...

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Have to agree on that kurt all they do is to post about the source code.

Ofc it would be a great thing if it was released it would be awsome!

But lets face it the source code wont be released and if it will it wont be in our life time haha.

the main problem i think is that the comunity is smaller now than it was all those years ago.. and whenever someone puts his back into actually doing something it dies because the lack of support. like that Nice try to reverse engineer blood 1 only made it to a very basic alpha.

And Qblood now known as transfusion really got my eyes open but now it seems to have stopped and is dying slowly.

My point is that those of us who are talented need to gather together and do something together transfusion was a good example of that but it lacked enought peeps for the job to go smooth enough.

B2r is the next big thing to happen and if all just gathered here we could rebuild blood 1 with our will and minds put together.

Dont let the projects die!!

As for you kurt i love your work and i think its great someone is doing something i always keep an eye out for new stuff and your project is the biggest thing since transfusion for sure.

Best of luck!.

Hi, I just stumbled upon this project.
Even though I really wish for Blood 1's source code to be released and even more for a blood 3 to happend, I'd rather have you get an extra comment. Because atleast there's something going on here. Doing things like this can be tedious and frustrating, but keep on pushing. People tend only to give credit and feedback when they see the end result.

Well, some of us actually like Blood II the way that it is. Caleb was awesome, if not better than in the original. The music was great, the game play was fast, and the story line was interesting and creative. I am looking forward to playing B2:R, but if it has a replacement story line like you seem to be suggesting, I won't consider it canon by any means.

December 18, 2008
Blogger kurt said...

That's an interesting opinion and of course everyone is entitled to one. But whether the new story eventually becomes canon or not, isn't really my concern. If the story makes sense and is entertaining, then the effort will be worth it, I think.

Before any changes can be judged they would have to be created, and this project is still currently under development. Hopefully all of this work will continue in the new year.

I can't really understand why everyone is acting like the Blood community is silent/dead? Many great things have come out this year, maybe not mods but still good stuff (Clari's HYPERTENSION project was announced this year, and Squall85 is working on a new The Flesh Game!). Eric J. Juneau's new "Blood 2: The Unforgiven" is one of the best fan works ever created! Then there is the Tome of Blood fan fictions, which I will not blurb here too much since I had an active role in their creation, conflict of interest and all that. ;-) There is also a very funny series of Lego stop motion videos called "Duke versus Caleb", which where uploaded to YouTube last summer (although created a while back). Also, not to sound self-promotional, the Blood Wiki has been growing at an exponential rate. Granted we don't have a lot of volunteers, but me and User:Tchernobog are dedicated and User:TheWallflower has put considerable effort into it. Don't loose hope! Chin up Kurt. Never start a project with the hopes that people will be knocking down your door with help. I know from my one experiences that you often have to work as a one man band, or at very least a small team. The Blood Wiki was announced pretty early on this year, and we barely got any attention at all. We even got into a bit of flame war over our treatment of Zblood. But we persevered, and kept on working. By June we had a few dedicated members and contributors. By now I can look proudly at what we have accomplished already, and find the odd supportive comment floating around the community. If you keep the same spirit, I am sure Blood II: Resurrection will come out in force.

How can you say this based on one posting from a single idiot? The sewer demo was the best atmospheric demo yet!
The new water sounds and water textures are the most blood like elements you've posted on youtube.
I took the liberty of browsing through earlier screens from the ModBb site. You've got an early version of that sewer pictured with standard b2 slime/water and watching your maps evolve has been a privilege.
The only postings that were more revealing/fun to watch were the technology demos.

Btw kurt, are you the one putting up all the gameplay demos on youtube in the last few months? There's been a rash of level play- throughs lately.

I only ask because there's been an up-tic in the number of downloads of b2 related material in the last 10 days or so. Even my botched attempt at a compilation of dedit tutorials has seen 5 dl's in the last week.

Thanks Tchernobog and Clari87. I'll do my best :)

zZardoZz, I'm afraid that there's more then just a single "idiot" out there, and that wasn't exactly the first negative comment that I've received. Even after all this time I still occasionally receive an offensive or insulting email, and it does make me wonder sometimes whether any of this is even worth the effort. But any support that I do receive lets me know that there actually is interest in this project, and that people care whether it gets completed or not.

I've only posted Resurrection videos on youtube and I have no explanation for any possible increased interest in Blood 2. But it's resurrection is ongoing ...

Just remember, Blood 2 wasn't received well. You have to take that into account when diving head first into a project like this.

Persevere and do this not for others, but yourself. That's what ultimately counts. =)

Also, I wouldn't complain about the old tech. ;) If you knew the tricks I have to pull for an engine as old as the one I'm using, you'd probably feel miles better =)
